What I Learned From NIKE
June 2015 was when everything really began to change... every month since then has been pretty much ... cray-cray. As I always say, I'm simply a girl from the cornfields of Illinois and never dreamed I'd be where I am today!
It so happens that last week where I was, was the Nike Campus Headquarters!
(shhh don't tell!)
As I walked down the Hall of Champions and looked up at all of those beautiful bronze plaques I was reminded of the trials, the failures, the wins, the broken bones, the proud families, the long workouts and more! Each of the athletes, displayed, worked endlessly to achieve their dreams.
Perhaps it's the Chicago suburban native, and 90s kid, within me but I swear I could almost hear Michael Jordan speaking to me!
"I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games and 26 times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." Michael Jordan
What if Michael Jordan, when cut from his sophomore basketball team, had given up and never decided to pick up a basketball again?
What if... What if he had given up, listened to other people said he couldn't do and never chased his dream... we'll never know. In the end, Michael didn't give up! He didn't let someone's negative opinion of him dictate his future. (He listened to his Momma!)
It's true. Deloris Peoples, Michael's mother, helped him make the decision between signing a contract with Nike or Adidas. When the mother and son duo sat down to discuss his options, Deloris told him that from both of the meetings she had observed that Nike would always treat him like family - and they have! I think we know how that story ended...
When I began my own journey toward female Empowerment Coaching I had a LOT of people tell me not to do this. That I should play it safe, do it for free, go back to school, find an office job, etc. Did I cave? Listen to someone else's opinion of what I should or could do? NO. Instead, I'm staying the course; putting the old Nike adage to use Just doing it - my way!
As we rounded a bend on One Bowerman Drive, we saw Tennis Courts, Soccer Fields, Running Tracks and trails... you name it! It shouldn't have come as any surprise to me that Nike would embody its brand. I've always appreciated the Nike brand after-all; their shoes, their ads, their clothing, and now for their commitment to healthy living and truly living out the brand.
They just do it.
What if we all lived our lives like Nike? What if you not only did what you were passionate about but you lived and acted on it, daily?
Is there something holding you back?
Fear? Insecurity? Doubt?
Believe me when I say, if I can do it, you can too.
However, in order to make my success a reality (like getting to work from the NIKE campus for the day!), I had to reach out and get the support I needed and learn a thing or two from women I admired and who were out there living the dream and doing it!
